MERS coronavirus infection

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection is a newly described viral disease recognised in the Middle East since September 2012.

Over 60 cases have been reported as at June 2013, more than half of the cases being fatal. Coronaviruses cause a variety of infections, mostly minor respiratory illnesses. SARS is also a coronavirus infection (SARS-CoV), first recognised in 2003, having emerged in Southern China in 2002.
