Message for GPs amid surge in azithromycin-resistant gonorrhoea

GPs are being reminded to collect cultures where possible amid a surge in azithromycin-resistant strains of N. gonorrhoeae in the first three months of the year.

A significant proportion of the strains have been found to be developing resistance and are penicillinase-producing, the RACGP says, citing information from the Australian Gonococcal Surveillance Program.

The college is reminding GPs to avoid non-culture diagnostic methods - such as PCR or nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) - where possible, because they are unable to provide definitive data for predicting antimicrobial
