Metabolic effects of combined contraceptives

Forty-two women were randomly assigned to take three continuous cycles of combined contraceptives, either orally, transdermally or vaginally. In all three groups, glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity worsened, and triglyceride levels and chronic inflammation increased.

The researchers concluded that glucose metabolism should be monitored when combined contraceptives are used and alternative methods should be considered for women with a history of type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease.
