Methadone in pregnancy impacts babies’ vision

UK researchers recorded flash visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in 100 healthy infants of mothers with drug addiction prescribed methadone antenatally and 50 infants whose mothers did not use drugs.

Babies exposed to methadone in utero were more likely to have altered flash VEPs regardless of other drugs consumed by the mother.

Although the clinical significance of the finding was unknown, it would be prudent to offer clinical visual follow-up to such infants, the authors wrote.
