MI risk may double in patients with atrial fibrillation
Some 23,000 participants without heart disease were enrolled between 2003 and 2007. Over 6.9 years of follow-up, 648 MIs occurred.
In a sociodemographic-adjusted model, AF was associated with a twofold increase in MI.
The association remained significant after adjusting for risk factors such as smoking status, BMI, diabetes and use of medications such as warfarin and statins.
The risk of MI associated with AF was higher for women than men, and for black people than whites.
