Misunderstood Mafia members are goodfellas

The first study of psychopathy in the Mafia compared 30 members of organisations such as Cosa Nostra and Camorra who were convicted of murder, kidnap, assault, drug trafficking and other crimes with 39 non-Mafia offenders jailed for similar offences in Palermo, Sicily.

Using the Psychopathy Checklist Revised scale, researchers found none of the Mafia members scored 30 or higher (the generally accepted cut-off for psychopathy), while only three scored between 20 and 29.

Among the controls, 10% scored above 30 and nearly half obtained scores between 20 and 29.

The researchers concluded the Mafia men were less manipulative, Machiavellian, narcissistic, parasitic and unemotional than the other criminals.
