Moderate topical corticosteroid use safe in pregnancy

In a study involving 2600 pregnant women exposed to topical corticosteroids and more than 7000 unexposed pregnant women, they found the treatment was not associated with orofacial cleft, fetal death or preterm delivery.

However, analysis based on the amount of steroid used, found a sevenfold, significantly increased risk of low birth weight when more than 300g of potent topical corticosteroid was dispensed over the duration of the pregnancy, suggesting potent steroid use should be minimised and fetal growth monitored, they said.
