More action needed to curb burgeoning dengue fever

NATIONAL records showed 20,474 cases of the disease occurring annually between 2006 and 2012 but, after analysing actual case reports in one district, researchers estimated that there are closer to six million cases across the country every year.

Annually the disease is likely to cost $627 million to diagnose and treat, the researchers estimated.

“With India’s increasing role in international travel and the global economy, the need for additional dengue control and prevention strategies… becomes increasingly strong,” the study authors wrote.
