More fibre may reduce stroke

A meta-analysis of eight cohort studies, including one Australian, found a 7% reduction in risk for every 7g per day increase in dietary fibre.

Professor Christopher Levi, a member of the National Stroke Foundation Clinical Council, said it was difficult to tease out the effect of specific components of a healthy lifestyle from observational studies.

“But if fibre is truly independent of other lifestyle factors in achieving this modest reduction in the risk of stroke, which is doubtful, then increasing fibre intake is a fairly simple thing to
