Morning-after pill may fail in heavier women

HRA Pharma, the French manufacturer of the morning-after pill NorLevo (levonorgestrel 750mcg), said last week it was changing package information to warn patients, according to international media reports.

HRA Pharma scientists discovered that NorLevo began losing its effectiveness in women who weighed 75kg and was not at all effective in women who weighed over 80kg.

HRA Pharma CEO Erin Grainer said it was prompted to look at levonorgestrel effectiveness in heavier women after a University of Edinburgh study from 2011 found overweight and obese women
