Since the discovery of the virus in New York City in 1999, there have been more than 16,000 cases of neuroinvasive disease and 780,000 illnesses, the researchers said.

“It has produced the three largest arboviral neuroinvasive disease [encephalitis, meningitis or acute flaccid paralysis] outbreaks ever in the US,” the authors wrote.

West Nile Virus surged in 2012 after several years of decreasing incidence, suggesting it will continue to produce unpredictable regional outbreaks, experts said.
