The study of nearly 200 such presentations at Melbourne’s Western Hospital in 2009 showed 65% were for the threat of self-harm and restraint, and sedation was not needed in 61% of cases.

A quarter were admitted to psychiatric wards, with admissions evenly split between voluntary and involuntary, and 67% were discharged home.

The authors suggested less restrictive or traumatic processes were needed to facilitate psychiatric assessment of such patients.
