Multiculturalism reduces racial prejudice: study

Data from studies conducted over a decade in England, Germany, the US and South Africa show that racial prejudice among Caucasians drops when they are exposed to ethnic minorities, according to psychology researchers from Oxford University.

Even if bigots do not mix with minority groups they become less prejudiced simply by living in a neighbourhood where others are mixing with people of different ethnicities, the research showed.

The authors called this a ‘passive tolerance’ effect which was as big an effect as passive smoking was on lung cancer risk.
