MVE virus risk grows with return of flooding

GPs outside MVE-endemic areas are urged to remain vigilant, with one case, a woman in northwest NSW, already reported this year.

There were 16 confirmed cases of MVE infection last year compared to 18 in the decade prior.

“What was very unusual was to see activity occurring in the southeast – NSW, Victoria and SA – where there had only been one human case since 1974,” said Clinical Professor David Smith, co-director of the University of Western Australia’s Arbovirus Surveillance and Research Laboratory.
