Mycophenolate effective as alternative IBD therapy

Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is a promising treatment for inducing and maintaining remission in patients with inflammatory bowel disease who are intolerant of thiopurines, say UK researchers.

Their retrospective analysis of 36 patients – 19 with Crohn’s, 16 with ulcerative and one with indeterminate colitis – showed that after eight weeks of MMF, 81% of patients had either achieved or maintained remission.

By six months, 58% were in sustained, steroid-free remission, the West Midlands-based authors found.
