Nasal balloon spares surgery for glue ear

AUTOINFLATION should be used more widely for otitis media with effusion in children older than four, researchers say after a study showing only nine children would need treating to benefit one.

The intervention using a nasal balloon is an effective, surgery-sparing option that GPs can offer and will soon be included in the RACGP’s free Handbook of Non-Drug Interventions (HANDI), says Professor Chris Del Mar from Bond University.

In the first large primary care study of autoinflation, British researchers found it was simple, low-cost and could be taught to young children in a primary
