Neck pain an important cause of disease burden

And in terms of the burden of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), neck pain ranks 21st worldwide but 10th in Australia.

The six-year investigation, led by Dr Damian Hoy at the University of Queensland, found neck pain DALYs increased globally from 23.9 million in 1990 to 33.6 million in 2010.

Neck pain prevalence is highest in the US and lowest in SE Asia.

The study identified DALYs were highest in the 40–45 year age group, and higher among women compared to men.
