Loss of taste after head injury

Post-traumatic taste disorder is a neglected and underestimated result of head trauma, say Italian neurologists.

In a case series of 53 patients with previous head trauma given olfactory and gustatory tests, 10 patients showed taste deficits.

One patient had ageusia and the other nine had dysgeusia or hypogeusia.

All of the patients had olfactory abnormalities, and 43 had functional anosmia.
