New data prompts call for hep C action

Surveillance data from Sydney’s Kirby Institute reveals that the number of Australians living with severe hepatitis C-related liver disease has more than doubled in a decade.

The figures show around 230,000 Australians had a chronic hepatitis C infection at the end of 2014. Of those, 44,730 had severe liver disease and/or hepatitis C-related cirrhosis – up from 18,580 cases in 2004.
