New finding on AED cessation in pregnancy

Stopping anti-epileptic medication during pregnancy is not a risk worth taking, say Australian researchers.

Their analysis of data from a nationwide register found women with epilepsy who were not on medication while pregnant did not have fewer teratogenic births as long as they avoided the known AED teratogens valproate and topiramate.

But they had a 20% higher risk of having a seizure during pregnancy, with all the dangers this entailed, including the possibility of physical injury during seizure or even sudden
