New guidance for kids with type 1 diabetes
PAEDIATRIC HbA1c goals were previously stepped down from <8.5% for children aged six and younger, to <8% for children aged six to 12 and <7.5% for those 13 and older.
The change was made after research dispelled the premise that severe hypoglycaemia needed to be avoided in children because it caused neurocognitive dysfunction.
The position statement also noted that the years before puberty do have an impact on future risk of complications.
