New healthy fat discovered

US scientists have discovered that mammals can produce a class of lipid molecules that enhance insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control and could also have anti-inflammatory benefits.

Research leader Dr Barbara Kahn says the team “were blown away to discover this completely new class of molecules”, which they have named fatty acid hydroxyl fatty acids (FAHFAs).

"Based on their biology, we can add FAHFAs to the small list of beneficial lipids," says her colleague Professor Alan Saghatelian of the Salk Institute in California.
