New IBS test shows promise

A new biomarker panel represents “exciting progress” towards an effective diagnostic test for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), say Australian researchers.

A combination of 34 genetic and serological markers accurately differentiated IBS patients from healthy volunteers, data from nearly 250 patients showed.

The addition of four psychological markers – measuring anxiety, depression, stress and non-GI somatic symptoms – further improved accuracy with sensitivity and specificity of over 85%, the authors
