New meningococcal case sparks call to vax kids

On Saturday a female cadet from the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) was reported to be in a critical condition after contracting the disease in Canberra. 

The woman presented to the Duntroon Health Centre on Saturday night with flu-like symptoms but was quickly transferred to Canberra Hospital. 

In a statement, the ADF said it had informed all members of the symptoms of meningococcal disease and strongly encouraged members to seek medical advice immediately if they display any symptoms. 

Preventive antibiotics have also been given to the seven cadets who lived on the same floor as the woman, and so far no one else has presented with symptoms, ADFA said.

The diagnosis follows the tragic death of two-year-old Ryder Manulat, who died last Thursday in the Hunter New England region in NSW.
