New standards needed for diverticulitis

Improved treatment of diverticulitis has reduced the need for elective surgery, according to a US review that calls for new surgical standards for the disease.

The systematic review of 68 studies found complicated recurrence of diverticulitis was rare after two acute episodes, occurring in under 5% of cases, even though current guidelines advise resection after two uncomplicated episodes.
