New vax advice for practice nurses

Members of the Influenza Specialist Group (ISG) said giving the vaccines together would help stop the pneumococcal infection that is often secondary to influenza, and is a major cause of death in the elderly.

Dr John Litt, ISG member and associate professor in general practice at Flinders University, said patients at high risk of developing pneumococcal pneumonia during the influenza season needed to be targeted.

“It’s a very simple strategy to offer the pneumococcal vaccine at the same time as the influenza vaccine.
