Non-Hodgkin lymphoma risk linked to benzene

Drawing on data from the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Census Bureau, experts mapped cases of the disease in the state of Georgia over an eight-year period.

They found elevated rates of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in areas with benzene-releasing plants and were able to quantify the decrease in risk of the disease with increasing distance from the plants.

Job exposure to benzene has been linked to blood cancer before, but this is the first study suggesting ‘passive’ exposure is also a risk.
