Nurses expand into endoscopy

Nurses have begun performing colonoscopies unassisted, under a contentious new scheme to meet the impending surge in demand for the procedure.

The $2.6 million Health Workforce Australia pilot program aims to improve access in areas that have trouble attracting specialists.

Six nurses in Queensland and Victoria have so far undertaken the advanced endoscopy training as part of the two-year project that wrapped up last month.
