Nurses needed to reduce asthma deaths

A study headed by RDNS senior research fellow Dr Dianne Goeman found asthma deaths among older people were disproportionately high. Although asthma deaths have fallen generally, they have fallen much less among older Australians.

Dr Goeman said nurses working in the community were in a unique position to help assist patients achieve better asthma outcomes.

People in the over-65 age group have the highest hospital admission rate for asthma, and therefore carry the highest cost burden.

The most recent data showed there were 416 asthma deaths in 2010 in Australia.
