Obesity could be tackled in the gut
These receptors not only ‘taste’ bitter, sweet, fat and savoury, they also respond by releasing hormones to control satiety and blood sugar levels. They respond to excess food intake and their malfunction may play a role in the development of obesity, diabetes, and related metabolic conditions, the researchers say.
The authors suggest surgery could potentially be avoided if taste receptors in the gut could be targeted to release hormones that signal fullness, thereby fooling the body into thinking that it has eaten.
