Obesity trumps genes in diabetes risk
8th July 2014
THE analysis of 20,000 people with and without type 2 diabetes showed that the genetic risk of diabetes was 49% for people aged under 50 compared with 34% for those aged 60 and over.
Relative genetic risk of diabetes was 62% for normal weight individuals compared with 27% for obese individuals.
However, normal weight individuals in the highest quartile of genetic risk had a 10-year incidence of diabetes of 0.89%, compared with 4.22% in obese individuals in the lowest quartile of genetic risk.
