OCD is often hidden and hard to treat

But many of the people who experience the condition now referred to as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) go untreated. OCD prevalence is about 2%.

Recent Australian research showed 59% of 154 patients taking part in a study to assess OCD symptoms were taking psychotropic medication, mainly SSRIs.

Lead author Dr Vlasios Brakoulias, a clinical lecturer at Sydney Medical School at Nepean Hospital where the research was conducted, said, given the characteristics of OCD, the number of patients taking medication was expected.
