One dose of HPV vaccine may be sufficient

A SINGLE dose of the bivalent HPV vaccine, instead of the recommended triple dose, could be enough to protect women against the HPV infections causing most cervical cancers, a new study shows.

If the results are confirmed by further research, the development could be a game-changer for resource-poor countries, says Dr Julia Brotherton, medical director of the National HPV Vaccination Program Register.

And Joe Tooma, CEO of the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation, says if one dose was shown to be effective there would be a far higher compliance rate by those being vaccinated.
