One million children a year develop tuberculosis

US epidemiologists, from the Harvard School of Public Health, said their modelling suggested the number of new paediatric cases was double that estimated by the World Health Organization and threefold higher than actual notifications.

They estimated that in 2010 there were one million new cases of childhood TB, of whom some 30,000 had multidrug resistant disease.

Better diagnostic methods and more systematic collection of data were urgently needed along with investment to improve global prevention of TB in children, the researchers said.
