Opera music extends life in heart-transplant mice

The researchers noted in their study, published in the Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, that mice who had received cardiac grafts and were exposed to La Traviata survived 27 days.

Reinforcing the view of at least some music fans, mice exposed to the singer Enya survived only 11 days.

The 23rd awards, presented at a gala ceremony in Harvard a few hours ago, celebrate the unusual, honour the imaginative and aim to spur interest in science, medicine and technology.

“The Ig Nobel Prizes honour achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think,” the organisers, Improbable Research, say on their website.
