Opioid use in RA linked to serious infections

Patients taking opioids for rheumatoid arthritis are at a significantly higher risk of contracting serious infections while in hospital than non-users, US research shows.

The study of 1790 patients with RA shows the risk of infection is 39% higher for those taking opioids compared with non-users after adjusting for age, seasons, nursing home residency and glucocorticoid use.
