Osteoporosis guidelines stoke drug holiday controversy

Australian bone specialists have cautiously welcomed new recommendations by the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research to consider drug holidays for people at low risk of osteoporotic fracture.

The recommendations suggest patients should be re-assessed for fracture risk after undertaking five years of oral bisphosphonates or three years of intravenous bisphosphonates.
