Overweight patients prefer shopping for their doctor

The study, of claims from 20,000 beneficiaries of an insurance plan, showed overweight patients were 23% more likely, and obese patients 50% more likely, to doctor-shop compared with normal weight patients. Doctor shopping was defined as claims from three or more primary care physicians in two years.

Overweight doctor shoppers were 73% more likely, and obese doctor shoppers 68% more likely, to have an emergency department visit compared with normal weight non-doctor shoppers.
