Is pain driving disruptive behaviours?
An American study has investigated pain as a possible cause of these behaviours.
Every resident of nursing homes in Florida is assessed on admission and then every three months. In one year, these assessments provided data on 56,577 people with dementia older than 65 years.
Disruptive behaviour was common. While 9% of the residents wandered, 24.1% had agitated behaviour and 24.4% were aggressive. The frequency and severity of pain was assessed on a three-point scale and disruptive behaviour was also measured.
