Parents confused about paediatric oral prednisolone dosage

PARENTS are making mistakes with paediatric oral prednisolone dosage, sometimes because of confusing labelling, the Victorian Poisons Information Centre says.

Calls involving oral prednisolone mixture are common and increasing, poisons information specialists say in the latest Australian Prescriber.

Of all calls involving oral corticosteroids over the past three years, those about prednisolone have accounted for 62-65%.

The authors say although dosing errors don’t usually have significant clinical consequences, too high a dose can lead to gastrointestinal discomfort, insomnia, restlessness
