Patients with psychotic disorders miss out on metabolic screening

Patients with psychotic disorders should be screened routinely for diabetes and cardiometabolic disease, according to a new position statement. 

The Australian Diabetes Society (ADS) says the patient’s psychiatric team will have a role in screening  where a GP is not available and it calls for a ‘cycle of testing and review’ to improve the poor physical health of people with severe mental disorders.

Data suggests patients with psychotic illness have a threefold higher rate of diabetes compared with the general population, the ADS says.
