PBS changes influence DMARD use

Prescriptions of leflunomide to treat RA dropped away after a change in PBS restrictions on biologics, say researchers.

After its PBS listing in 2000, prescribing of leflunomide grew from 0.36 daily doses per 1000 inhabitants a day to 0.56 in 2009.

But in 2010, the PBS made it easier to prescribe biologics, removing the need for patients to first fail either leflunomide or cyclosporin.
