Personality important in glycaemic control

The three-year longitudinal study in 142 type 1 diabetes patients aged between eight and 19 assessed personality by the five factor model, which includes conscientiousness, agreeableness, emotional regulation, extraversion and openness.

HbA1c deteriorated over time in individuals in the lowest tertile of conscientiousness and agreeableness, while low or high emotional regulation were also associated with worse glycaemic control, compared with moderate emotional regulation.
