Physical illness linked to low mood

A population study in 3.5 million people showed hospitalisation for an autoimmune disorder or infection increased the risk of a mood disorder by 45% and 62%, respectively.

The risk of mood disorders was increased most in autoimmune diseases with suspected brain-reactive antibodies such as autoimmune hepatitis and systemic lupus erythematosus, the research found.
The risk also increased dose-dependently with the number of infections and in proximity to time of infection.
