Polio outbreak hits congo
ALL international travellers to the Republic of Congo are advised to have completed a primary series of polio vaccinations, despite a recent polio outbreak appearing nearly controlled.
The outbreak of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) started around last November in Pointe Noire and was the first WPV case in the country in 10 years.
As of 8 March, 387 cases were confirmed, including at least 187 deaths.
Outbreak control has included four rounds of national supplementary immunisation.
Low rates of childhood polio immunisation in young adults due to weaknesses in vaccination services, civil war, crowding and limitations in water supply and sanitation are believed to have contributed to the outbreak.
