Poor diet hampers asthma drug efficacy

A poor diet can impede the efficacy of asthma medications, and can worsen the condition itself, new research has found.

Data presented at this year’s meeting of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) revealed that while polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) enhanced the transport of ventolin (salbutamol), saturated fat inhibited drug transport.

As part of an investigation on the role diet plays in asthma severity and prevalence, researchers examined the influence of dietary fat on the efficacy of ventolin.

They found that the amount of salbutamol transported
