Poor disinfection of transvaginal probes putting women at risk


Specialist women’s health clinics are failing to adequately disinfect transvaginal ultrasound probes, putting thousands of women at risk of HPV and genital herpes, Medical Observer has been told.

The alarm about substandard disinfection protocols in smaller practices — including those offering IVF, and obstetrics and gynaecology — has been raised by an accreditation manager tasked with ensuring clinics are safe.

Nicole Walton, a registered nurse and director of Choice Accreditation Services, estimates that more than
