Post-op joint replacement risks significant in MetS
Patients with several metabolic risk factors are significantly more likely to have complications following joint replacement.
Patients with a high BMI, cholesterol, or blood pressure were three times more likely to have post-op complications within a year after hip or knee replacement surgery, the study of 168 patients found.
Not surprisingly obesity was the biggest risk factor, with complications occurring in 16.2% of the patients with a BMI greater than 30kg/m2.
The impact of BMI becomes even greater when combined with hypertension: 30.8 percent of patients with a BMI ≥ 30kg
