Predicting GDM in the first trimester?
Maternal serum samples were collected between weeks 9–11 and weeks 16–27 of gestation from 150 Finnish women participating in a prospective observational cohort study. GDM was diagnosed by a standard oral glucose tolerance test.
Levels of three glycoprotein biomarkers were significantly associated with subsequent development of GDM in 50 GDM subjects, compared to 50 trimester-matched controls.
One of the biomarkers alone detected 84% of 1st-trimester GDM cases, but had a 4% false positive rate. Accuracy improved to 92% when all three biomarkers were used.
