Predicting mental health problems in patients with CVD

Among 160 cardiac patients, those whose in-hospital anxiety or depression was likely to worsen rather than improve on discharge tended to be smokers, to have financial stress, poor social support, comorbidities and poor self-rated health compared to clinician assessment of disease severity.

Objective indicators for risk of worsening mental illness were particularly important in rural communities due to the likelihood of stigma, the researchers said.
